The Genius of the Victorians
March 12th, 2010
Having just seen the Victorian photocollage exhibit at the Met, I am once again blown away by the surreal and whimsical genius of Victorian women. Clearly not being thought much of made these women their own kinds of genius, subversive mesmerists and jesters of the highest order. These “amateurs” put the invention of the steam engine to shame and continue to influence artists and writers to this day. It may make them blush in their afterlives to think it, but these Sirens seduce with the best of those ladies who flashed their garish ankles to passing gentlemen.
