Decadence is not just a personality trait, it’s a decor.  Louis did it better than many, and his taste exudes the scent of royalty storming past the servants impatiently, demanding a pomander to block their lowly stench. The furniture invites the revelation of flesh beneath magnificent fabrics and the removal of pointed shoes with elaborate bows on narrow ankles. You can get woozy just thinking about French court life, and what better way to decorate your own little kingdom?  We may live in shoeboxes these days, but oh, what shoeboxes they can be!

(Don’t bother pointing out to me the historical inaccuracy of many of my choices here – I’m no historian! Just a sybarite…)
